Being on a discovery tour with your human without a leash is the biggest thing for most dogs. From a dog’s perspective, dog sports discipline exercise the freewheel brings many opportunities for browsing and playing. But there are also many temptations, from fascinating tracks to contacting conspecifics and other people. In such moments, it is important that a recall command can replace the leash as needed. Learn more about the important basic command here.
Why is the recall of the dog so important?
From the dog’s perspective, the environment is full of exciting information that we do not capture with human beings. The connection is not always recognizable when the dog suddenly becomes independent and goes its own way. Stimuli such as a sudden encounter with conspecifics or irresistible opportunities for hunting and playing can lead even good dogs to temporarily push the presence of their humanity into the background. If the dog puts itself in a dangerous situation, endangers or bothers others, or if you simply want it to come back, you have to intervene.
At your command, the dog should immediately and without contradiction abandon his activity and return to you. And if there are still so many potential rabbits hopping around him or an attractively scented is walking by on the other side of the street: Your call must be followed. Only if the dog is always retrievable and obedient, you can let him off the leash without risk.
The dog does not stop recalling
There are basically three different starting points that complicate the recall of the dog:
Priority conflict: The dog is busy with something that takes precedence over obedience for him. For example, if the animal inspects the location or renews its territory markings, it will want to stop this activity before obeying. The problem: lack of authority of the holder.
Distraction: The four-legged friend is confronted with an impulse that is so strong that it overlays the command. Where this stimulus threshold lies, of course, depends on the individual dog and the specific situation.
Negative experiences: The dog has internalized that the recall signal has unpleasant consequences for him, for example, that he is scolded – the result of a parenting error.
Recall dog: Which word?
For the recall, you should establish a command that is otherwise not used in the dog’s life. Everyday words such as “Come!” or “Come here!” are therefore less suitable. The retrieval command is a special one that is not used for the general summoning of the sniffer’s nose but must be reliably followed in dangerous situations, among other things. In order to establish this special status and to avoid accidental use in everyday life, foreign languages can be accessed: “Back!” or “Turn!” for example. Alternatively, you can also use a special whistle.
How can I rebuild the recall for the dog?
Whether you’re teaching your young dog the recall command for the first time or you need to rebuild it because the old command just doesn’t work, the tactics are the same. Coming back on demand must have a positive meaning for the dog. Initially, it is worth using particularly sought-after treats, which are reserved for this special lesson and which you only bring out when the four-legged friend has obeyed. The animal should not be lured but rewarded with obedience.
Proceed in the following steps:
Adjust a situation in which the dog is relaxed in the environment with as little stimulus as possible. The apartment is ideally suited. Lure the dog to you with posture and voice and wait for it to move in your direction.
Meanwhile, give the command that should act as a retrieval signal. If you are rebuilding the callback, be sure to choose a different command than the one originally used.
Don’t give the dog a treat until he’s with you. This is important: The dog should not run to a treat, but react to your call.
The recall alone is not enough, because the animal should not start again immediately after being rewarded. Temporarily couple the recall signal with a basic command such as “Sit!” or “Place!” until the four-legged friend has internalized that after the recall it is desirable to stay in place. The dog may only leave if you expressly allow it, for example with a command such as “Go!”.
Callback dog training
If this lesson sits, you increase the level of difficulty. Call the dog from greater distances, from out of sight and without prior attraction by posture and voice.
As an alternative to treat reinforcement, a short play unit can also be done with an attractive toy intended exclusively for this lesson. You don’t give this toy out of your hand: to play, the dog has to come to you.
How do I train the dog’s recall under distraction?
Even if the retrieval command sits under controlled conditions, it is not transferable to all situations. Your dog does not hear e.B. when he sees other dogs? In the presence of special stimuli, information of different types of rat terrier the dog reassesses the priority between recall and its actions. Retrieval under distraction must be practiced regularly. Recall training with dogs should be done with a tow leash, especially in more turbulent environments, on the dog meadow, or in the park. Be consistent: Use only the command word and reward only after an immediate recall. With a slight pull on the leash, you can draw the attention of the animal to you.
